In 1892, they produced their first revolver- a double-action pistol called the “Browning Automatic Rifle” or “BAR” for short-. This firearm became wildly popular among soldiers and law enforcement officers across America. It was quickly adopted by other countries too, such as Britain and Germany. It is the county seat for Burke County and home to two hospitals, UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC-Wilmington. Burlington is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the border of Wake County and Durham County. The population was 33,851 as of 2017. Burlington was founded in 1855 by Scots-Irish immigrants, who named it for Burlington, Ontario, where their families had settled after fleeing religious persecution in Ireland. The first store in Burlington was built on what is now Elm Street and Second Avenue by John Denton in 1857. In 1870, the town voted to incorporate and became one of the ten cities that formed the Tar Heel State when North Carolina seceded from Virginia before becoming an American state. The city's first mayor was Wm. Hinson and its first street map was created by Niles Eldredge. In 1886–87, Burlington hosted the annual meeting of the United States National Republican Convention which helped nominate Grover Cleveland as president despite his rival James Kildare winning a majority of electoral votes. After Cleveland's inauguration on April 30, 1889, Burlington became part of newly independent South Carolina until it gained its own government in 1896 under Governor David Foard. On July 1st 1908 voters approved incorporation into Raleigh with a population of 487; however this charter amendment failed to pass due to lack of support from then-Mayor Burr Boyd (the only African American voter in Raleigh at that time). In 1915–16 Mayor Edwin Gentry attempted to annex Carytown – then part of Raleigh – but this also failed because Carytown's residents did not want to merge with their more affluent home town.] From 1916 until 1951 there were only two mayors: Jock Mahoney (1916-1921) and Harry Blackmun (1921-1927). With increasing wealth within Durham County and limited development opportunities outside Raleigh during this time period Burlington lost much potential business growth while Raleigh grew richer.[1] Even so Randolph Wright Park began being developed adjacent to downtown around 1950 giving some hope for revitalization though no success has been seen since then.] On December 12th 1955 local resident Floyd Garrison Jr detonated a small atomic bomb over Kill Devil Hills Regional Airport about 15 miles northeast near Wilmington CA having announced plans he made public several weeks earlier[2] as part of antiwar protests against America’s involvement in Vietnam War;[3][4][5][6][7] resulting in deaths among civilians including six children aged 3 months old who were eating candy when detonation took place,[8][9] FBI agent shot dead,[10] military member killed,[11][12]; along with over 100 injured or taken hostage from buildings across southeast NC following blast which destroyed entire airport generating huge firestorm that swept throughout town
