In 1949, Burlington hosted the first international conference on human rights held in North America. The city has experienced economic growth over recent decades with various businesses opening up shop there such as Macy's Department Store, KFC, and JCPenney.

In 1863, General Robert E Lee ordered General Edmund Kirby Smith to march through Johnston County to capture Fort Fisher at Pee Dee Island so that Confederate forces could blockade Wilmington, Delaware; this event is known as the Battle of Burlington Ridge or the Battle of Jacksonville Beach because it occurred just north of Jacksonville Beach on Cape Lookout Peninsula between December 12th - 14th 1863. On January 8th 1865 Union troops under Brigadier General William Troup attacked enemy positions south of town resulting in an almost total rout; over 200 men died including many officers and soldiers from Manchester Regiment who had garrisoned Burlington for weeks before this engagement During Reconstruction following the Civil War, Burlington became one of the most African American populated cities in America with African Americans owning more than 50% of all property there until about 1970 when purchasing power began peaking due to increased crack cocaine use among African Americans throughout much southern United States however since then Blacks have continued to purchase majority ownership within certain neighborhoods within City limits while maintaining some degree of control over governance On July 15th 2019 Mayor Justin Wilkerson announced plans for $11 million dollar investment into new public infrastructure including resurfacing streets downtown (including 6 blocks long block 5), repairs to old bridges/road crossings & sidewalks throughout city limits as well as creating 2 new large parkland areas totaling 247 acres adjacent both riverfront properties owned by City government while also creating 1 small park located off Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard east side near Veterans Memorial Coliseum – Project 1 will begin construction later this year while Project 2 will be completed by 2021
