Burlington was founded in 1755 by Captain George Burroughs, who named it for Burlington, Massachusetts. The town grew rapidly becoming a major center of trade and commerce. In 1819, the United States Congress passed the Missouri Compromise which divided the country into slave and free states. This caused a great uproar in Burlington as many people felt that their rights were being violated. The townspeople quickly came up with a plan to get rid of the slaves and they were successful; they formed a society known as the "Liberty Party" and won control of the city government. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1868 when it became one of the largest cities in North Carolina.
