Boone is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,640 as of the 2010 census. In 2016, Forbes magazine named Boone one of the "Best Places to Live" in America. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Boone goes back over 350 years and began when settlers arrived on the area now known as Boone County in 1799. The first post office was established in 1825 and by 1830 there were 10 houses in the community. A school was built in 1838 and by 1840 there were 50 residents. A courthouse was built between 1850-1851 and it served as the county seat until 1865 when Durham became the state capital. In 1881, James Fenton donated land for a public park which would become known as Central Park today. The park includes a large lawn with an artificial waterfall that provides water for fountains throughout the park year-round; two baseball diamonds; a playground; a basketball court; four tennis courts; three running tracks; and two pavilions used for concerts and other events. In 1902, lumber companies started to establish logging camps within town limits which would eventually result in many homes being built along what is now US 421 Business Loop (later I-85). Boonesville Road (now I-485)was also developed at this time as part of these logging projects. By 1910 there were 1,500 people living within city limits with six businesses employing over 100 people including stores such as Hanes Stores Inc., J C Penney Co., Woolworths Ltd., Sears Roebuck & Co., Piggly Wiggly etc.. Some saw mills closed during World War II while others continued operations but stopped producing lumber after 1945 due to competition from more modern mills outside of North Carolina.. In 1965 Boonesville Road became I-85 when US 421 Business Loop split off from I-85 concurrent with its sister highway becoming NC 1234 Alternate between Chapel Hill/Lenoir City/Fayetteville and Carrboro/Lagrange Hills.. TodayBoone continues to grow with new development taking place along what has been called "The Boulevard" including several highrise buildings completed or under construction since 2006 including The towers at 601 – 602 Blvd #102 just east side of 5th St NW near Elmwood Ave NW

Boone, North Carolina is a small town in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is located on the Eastern Shore of South Carolina and was named for General James Boone after his victory over the Cherokee in 1814. The first permanent white settlers arrived in 1793 and began to build homes around what is now downtown Booneville. By 1800, there were about 100 people living in Booneville and three stores. In 1821, General James Moore decided to make a new settlement ataloosa on the Western Shore of South Carolina because it offered more fertile land and better access to sea trade than the eastern shore. He named his new community after himself, Boonesborough on July 10, 1821. By 1830, there were 556 residents living in Booneville and 12 stores. The first post office was established in Booneville on May 11, 1830 by Elisha Greenfield with the name given to him by Governor John Sprigg as part of a gift from President Andrew Jackson to commemorate Boonesborough's victory over Native Americans at Rocky Mount Meade two years earlier. The town grew rapidly during this time with many new buildings being erected including a courthouse (1834), jail (1835), school (1836), Masonic Lodge No. 1 (1837), Baptist Church (1838) and EpiscopalChurch (1839). On November 15th, 1840, Confederate forces attacked Union troops stationed at Fort Pemberton near present-day Booneville while they were withdrawing from Chattanooga; the attack resulted in an almost total loss for the Union cause with only 16 men killed and 93 wounded compared to 95 killed and 350 wounded for Confederate forces which resulted in 8 dead including 2 generals (). The population of Booneville had grown so large that by 1850 it had reached 1,813 people making it one of North Carolina's most populous towns according to census data provided by historian David Aikenberry . At its peak during Reconstruction following Reconstruction policy designed to integrate African Americans into society as equals—the end result being increased crime rates among whites—Booneville boasted nearly 4200 residents . But althoughbooneviliveableduring Reconstruction period (),crimeratesamongwelcomingAfricanAmericansintosocietyasequals—theendresultbeingincreasedcrimeratesamongwhites; neverthelessbooneviliveableuntil1927 (). After 27 years without interruption growth stopped abruptly between 1925-1945 due largely to World War II shortages of labor supplies – resultinginpopulation decreasingfrom1 millionto500 000people (.pdf) After World War II ended civilian demand for jobs dried up leaving joblessness prevalently affecting black males age 25-54% throughout entire postwar period (−15%). Economic conditions improved somewhat starting early 1960s but decline continued until late 1990s leading Average household income below poverty line (%) As recently as 2001 median household income still lagged behind low incomes experienced by majority black females (−33%)
