Boone, North Carolina is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg metropolitan area. The current mayor is Saundra Taylor and the town Board of Commissioners is chaired by Crispin Glover. The town was settled in 1827 by settlers from Kentucky who named it after General Andrew Boone. At first, Boone's Creek served as the town's main water supply but an improvement to the creek system led to growth in Boone and other nearby towns. In 1868, Boone became one of two towns within Gaston County that were chartered as municipalities separate from their respective counties; this separates Gatlinburg (to the north) from Boonesboro (to the south). In 1862, when Confederate General Braxton Bragg came through Gastonia on his march toward Raleigh he stopped at Boonesboro for dinner with local officials before continuing on his way. A plaque commemorates that event at the old post office building on Main Street in Boonesboro. A cotton gin was built near what is now downtown Boonesboro by Daniel Mapp in 1859 and became known as "Mapp's Mill." During Reconstruction following Reconstruction efforts ended in 1865 because Confederate soldiers had surrendered, many white men moved back into Tennessee or South Carolina where they were not welcome and were forced to work off their parole terms or go into exile. Many of these men lived outside of Boonesboro until their families could move them into town during early 20th century times when infrastructure improvements allowed for more permanent residentry in downtown against original African American flight out of Harpers Ferry due to Jim Crow laws designed to exclude black people from education and employment opportunities throughout much of America during this time period
Boone was founded in 1785 by George Boone and his brother, James. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s, becoming a major center of cotton production. In 1875, the town was incorporated as a city. Today, Boone is a small community located in southeastern North Carolina.
