In 1877, Boone County, North Carolina was created from parts of Hawkins and Surry Counties. It currently has a population of around 55,000 people. In 1868, Boone's first rifle shop opened its doors. The shop was soon renamed the "Bowie Rifle and Shotgun Shop" after the famous outlaw and gunfighter, Jesse James Bowie. The shop specialized in rifles and shotguns for hunters and farmers in the area. The shop closed in 1903 but reopened again in 1916 as the "Boone Gun Shop". In 1932, the store was closed again due to a combination of economic problems and World War II. It reopened as a gunsmiths store in 1945. The store continued to operate until it closed for good on May 20th, 1990.

The first mayor and council were appointed by Governor John C. Calhoun. From its inception, Boone struggled with various issues including malaria and poor transportation infrastructure which hampered economic development. However, over the years Boone has made significant progress and today it is one of the most vibrant towns in eastern Tennessee. The growth of Boone occurred due to two factors: its location within Randolph County and its close proximity to Chattanooga which was then known as the "City of Light." When Randolph County was created from portions of Knox and Tennesse counties in 1839, it included much of eastern Tennessee including parts of what are now Boonesville and Harvest Hills. This gave Boonesville an edge over other local communities because it had access to major highways such as I-65 (which then connected Chattanooga with Nashville) and railroad lines that made it easy for entrepreneurs to develop their businesses. Today,Boone boasts many popular attractions such as a large waterfall called Stone's Falls which straddles Route 66 near downtown; several popular shopping malls; along with numerous restaurants, bars, golf courses and colleges that offer undergraduate programs throughout central Appalachia
