The Boone Rifle and Pistol Company was organized in 1868. It served as a rifle regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War and lost most of its members to death or wounds. In 1865, the company was disbanded and its members were merged into the 12th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. The unit fought in the Battle of Gettysburg and other engagements during the war. After the war, it was re-organized as a rifle regiment again and served until it was disbanded in 1882.
Boone, North Carolina is a small town located in Rutherford County, North Carolina. The population of Boone was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Rutherford County and has a total area of 32 square miles. The climate in Boone is classified as "temperate" by the National Climate Data Center. Boone had an average precipitation of 9 inches from 1901 to 2010. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Boone in 1777 and named it after George Washington's home state of Virginia. In 1819, John Cranch established a post office here and renamed it for General Andrew Jackson who had recently been elected president on a platform that emphasized democracy and patriotism. When James Kensey arrived in 1828 he found only three houses and about 50 people living hereabouts so he erected a log cabin known as Old Kensey's House which still stands today on Main Street near the corner with State Road 7 where his store once stood. In 1833, when Rutherford County was created from portions of Davidson County, Boone became its county seat with land given to it by Governor Moore along with other towns within its boundaries including Hickory Hill (later Hurricane). In 1840–41 United States Representative David Seddon visited Boone while on a circuit tour through the region and noted that although little progress had been made since his visit two years earlier when he estimated that 1/5th of the fences were destroyed or broken down due to rustling by cattlemen, $3 million were being invested in town improvements etc., this estimate included twenty new homes built between mills & churches etc., much improvement having since taken place during his absence—this must have shown something good because very few reports mention any such thing again until after Mr Seddon’s death some time later! No doubt also because many people hereabouts knew him personally as well as having seen his picture frequently advertised in papers! A post office was established at Boone in 1835 under the name Hickory Hill but changed its name to Rutherford Courthouse Post Office soon afterwards due to competition from nearby Hickory Grove (now part of Cary). By 1860 there were over 150 residents in Boone with 100 businesses doing trade including 2 stores & 3 banks; 4 doctor’s offices; 3 schools; 2 brick factories; 2 engineering firms (& one coal mine) & 11 cotton ginners licensed by US Government early part of century viz: Chatham Coal Mining Company Grant Coal Mine 1890-1899 Hargrave Coal Mining Company 1911-1920 Pemberton Coal Mines Incorporated 1920-1925 Henderson Mine Co.) All these businesses except 1 went out OF BUSINESS BY THE EARLY 1900S!!! Which means most probably because they couldn’t compete with neighbors who had bigger malls, better transportation systems etc.—all thanks to roads newly built right after Second World War!! In 1865 Confederate General Braxton Bragg burned all but 6 miles of URRR [Unemployed Workers' Relief Railroad] trackage leading into Knoxville so no more railroad access was needed here so most businesses closed down too❖️ Lost hundreds if not thousands jobs during Reconstruction period !! #historic #boone
