The first settler in Boone was John Boone who arrived in 1792. He built a cabin on Bear Mountain which he named "Ft. Hunter". In 1814, Daniel Boone journeyed from Kentucky to purchase land in Haywood County from John Sevier. Daniel's brother James also settled in this area and his son Jesse erected a large log cabin on present day Mount Carmel Road near modern day Parkersburg. In 1817, General Nathan Bedford Forrest fought at Second Battle of Bull Run while en route to battle against Robert E Lee and his army near Charlottesville, Virginia. After the battle, Forrest became an American hero and was given General George Washington's Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle. Many people today refer to him as "the Genghis Khan of our time." Ira Pye (1849-1941), one of America's most prominent educators and publishers wrote about Boone during World War I: “Boone…was one of America’s earliest towns; its early pioneers were men who had come down from Kentucky by way of Roanoke Rapids; they had followed their father’s example and started out as farmers….They soon realized that there would be no getting around this mountain country without first gaining passage through it….When they reached their fortieth year they began to realize that they could not do it all alone…..So they organized themselves into companies or gangs and started out by themselves….By 1903 there were over two hundred men living hereabouts permanently; these supplemented—or even duplicated—the original white settlers…." Majestic homes still stand today including Ft Hunter Cabin (now part of Arlington National Cemetery) which was built by Daniel Boone himself between 1792-1794 when he lived on Bear Mountain with his family before moving down river to Ft Fraser where he continued doing business until 1815 when war forced him finally downriver along with his kinfolk Fort Hunter Cabin & others property recorded map 1800 .
