This event helped solidify Boone's reputation as a place where polite society couldmingle peaceably with common soldiers on equal footing. The first store opened in Bear Creek Township in 1824 by James Witherspoon and his brother-in-law George Fenton within walking distance of downtown Booneville (present day Burlington). In 1829, Michael Bodine started a shoe manufacturing business which soon grew into an empire with plants located throughout eastern North Carolina including one in Macon County near Grahamstown (now part of Spartanburg). In 1874, Ulysses S. Grant visited Appalachian Regional Commission headquarters for six days during his presidential campaign and made speeches before returning to Knoxville two days earlier than planned because he feared for his safety when traveling through western North Carolina on horseback over mountains covered with snow! On April 12, 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia after over two years of combat. The surrender effectively ended the Civil War in North Carolina. The area that includes today's Boone County was originally part of Cherokee Nation before becoming an integral part of North Carolina during Reconstruction following the war. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, a group of white men who desired to keep control over their land formed a company called "The Red Men" and began making efforts to purchase or sell land within present-day Boone County boundaries. One such effort led to the establishment of what is now known as White Sulphur Springs Resort on Valentine's Day 1909. One major event associated with Boone during its early history was its participation in the American Revolution which took place from 1775-1783 near present day Mount Airy (now Davidson). James Boone fought for independence from Great Britain and later served as lieutenant colonel for one of America's first infantry brigades under George Washington during the revolution. In 1785, he married Mary Stroudsfield who gave birth to eight children including future Ulysses S Grant who also served in America's Revolutionary War effort but died young at age 24 while serving under Benedict Arnold at Saratoga Springs (now Albany). Richard Moulton Knox also lived briefly in Boonesville during this time period before moving on to establish Knox & Co., merchants active throughout much of central Appalachia prior to statehood eastward into Tennessee and Kentucky respectively on October 1st 1792年。
