After World War I ended with defeat for America by Germany and Austria-Hungary in 1918 – which left much European wreckage behind – many Boones resettled on reservations throughout the south central United States after finding work or opportunity on American farms during this time period (Goudreau). Boone, North Carolina is a small town located in eastern North Carolina. The population was 9,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fayetteville-Cumberland County and is within the Asheville metropolitan area. The town was founded by men who were looking for a place to settle after being displaced by the Cherokee Removal in 1828. Boone's name comes from two German settlers, Wilhelm Boone and George Boone, who donated land to the village in 1838. In 1875, William "Babe" Harnett organized a church and school in what is now downtown Boone. He also developed a cotton gin and raised corn for export to Europe during the mid-19th century. The first post office opened on July 1, 1886, with Wm. Harnett as clerk; it closed on December 15, 1907. The present courthouse was built in 1912 and dedicated on October 25 of that year. The first female postmaster was Mrs. Lottie Easley (1893-1974). In 1916 Union College football player James Tatum became one of only three African Americans playing varsity football at UNC; he would go on to play college football for four more seasons before leaving for good in 1924 due to apartheid policies enacted by South Africa during the 1920s

In 1860, Confederate generals Anderson and Johnston fought at Fort Sumter, resulting in the death of many Union soldiers.
