Boone is a city in Wake County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 34,906 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wake County. Boone is located on the North Carolina–Virginia border and shares borders with Randolph County to the east and Gaston County to the west. The first European settler in what is now Boone was Nicholas Boone who homesteaded a farm in 1799. Air Force Base closed in 1989 and all its buildings were demolished but some remnants remain including a small cemetery which still exists today as part of Park View Cemetery Incorporated. In 1824, Daniel Boone purchased land from Lord Fairfax for $1,000 cash and formed a township within present-day Raleigh Township called "Logan". In 1840, he transferred his holdings to what is now Wake Forest University's Wake Forest School of Medicine for medical students seeking training south of Charlotte. At this time Logan had about 100 residents and became known as "the Town that Was". By 1850, it had grown to 1,500 residents with an academy and three churches – Presbyterian (later Baptist), Methodist Episcopal (now Quaker) and Congregationalist (later Universalist). In 1865 when Raleigh Township changed its name to Wake County after becoming a state government entity Boonesboro was included within it as well as future Carysboro which became an independent municipality in 1971 before finally merging with Raleigh proper in 1998. On November 3rd 1860 during lunchtime / early evening Cherokee Indians led by Chief John Ross attacked Fort Nashborough near present day Hickory Hill Road/US 50 exit 76B north of town center killing 5 Americans including Lt Col Robert E Lee commander of Confederate forces at that time Including 2 officers killed & 8 enlisted men including Captain James Fenton commanding US Forces at Fort Nashborough Also Killed were 4 warriors along side Chieftain John Ross bounty hunter named Elijah Mills & 2 others . In the early 1800s, people who wanted to buy a gun were limited to buying pistols and shotguns. As new technology developed, however, firearm manufacturers began to produce rifles and shotguns. In the late 1800s and into the 1900s, there was a large increase in firearms sales due to prohibition of handguns in many countries.
In 1837, Boone County was created from parts of Randolph and McDowell Counties. As a result of the American Civil War, the county became part of the Confederacy. In 1865, it was re-established as a Union County. The population was only 2,500 in 1880 but increased to 15,000 by 1920. It has since plummeted to 5,000 people today. Boone is located in central North Carolina and is bordered by Moore County on the north, Carteret County on the east, Tyrrell County on the south, and Henderson County on the west. According to the 2010 census, its total area is 30 square miles (86 square kilometers). The area that would become Boone was first settled by Native Americans in what is now western Randolph County in 1792. A group of English settlers led by Major General James Robertson explored this region in 1794 and named it for General John Wayne who had helped lead British forces into America during the French and Indian War. The first European settler to live in Boone was George Washington Beals who arrived in 1807 with his family from Scotland. He built a cabin near present day Fort Mill before moving downstream along river Bankett Creek to build a more permanent home at Lick Branch which he renamed Banks Landing after himself and his son John Banks Jr.. In 1809 Beals/Banks moved his family farther downriver when they discovered what they called “the most extensive bottomland [in] America” where they found fertile land that could be developedThree years later Jesse Hardin bought Banks Landing from Beals/Banks and founded Hardin’s Mills which became one of North Carolina’s largest textile mills After several years of growth Hardin sold his business interest in 1916 to Andrew Mellon who then merged it into United States Steel Company From thereon until 1970 Boone experienced some intense economic decline followed by an increase during World War II When war production shut down demand dropped precipitously resulting in mass unemployment However since 1990 growth has resumed with over $1 billion invested statewide There are now over 20 businesses operating within 3 miles radius of downtown including 12 craft breweries as well as 25 medical centers including Baptist Health Medical Center which opened up space inside town limits In addition 1 million residents call Boone their home year round making it one ofAmerica’s fastest growing communities
Boone County was created in 1828 from parts of Randolph and McDowell counties. It named for General Andrew Boone, the hero of the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The county seat is Radcliff.
