When Pickens did not join Raleigh until 1830, Boone became its seat; however, it retained its status as a village until 1885 when it incorporated as a city under Mayor John Hargrave with $5 million in bonds issued to finance its growth. Boone has experienced significant growth since then: The population increased from 2,000 at the time of incorporation to over 10,000 by 1990; during that same period it added over 100 jobs in various industries including accounting services (now known as KPMG), information technology ( Afterwards Merrill Lynch ), health care (QVC/CVS/AARP/ Humana ), fishing (Oscar Mayer), retail trade (Jamba Juice) and real estate development (Homesecurity). The largest employer today remains government: There are more than 50 full-time employees at Wake County’s Office of State Budgeting & Management responsible for developing spending plans for local governments statewide; another dozen or so employees support budget research at NCBI’s Research Triangle Park campus; while 12 Department Of Social Services workers provide social services heretofore provided only by churches or volunteer agencies outside town limits Today's downtown core offers shopping opportunities available only through outstate malls which operate about 15 miles away
