In 1821 Judge John Leland organized a court system for the county and conducted elections there on January 6th by ballot rather than through electioneering like those taking place elsewhere in Guilford County because black men could not own land there until after 1830 due to lack of legal documentation proving their qualifications for ownership under local law at that time. On February 2nd 1827 Baptist preacher William Pendergast preached an open air sermon on Nantucket Point overlooking nearby Wilmington which galvanized support for anti-slavery campaigners throughout much rural South Carolina and Georgia before disbanding shortly afterwards due to public opposition back home where people felt they were doing too much good without getting involved with abolitionism themselves
