Boone is a small town in North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. The population was 5,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg County, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Boone was founded by settlers in 1792. In 1857, Boone became a county seat and remained so until 1959 when it was moved to Huntersville. The first settler in Boone was James Robertson who arrived in 1792 from Scotland. He named his new settlement after his brother-in-law's family name, Boone. The first post office in Boone opened in October 1800 and served for six months only before being closed due to lack of mail delivery. A post office was again opened in December 1802 and served until May 1804 when it was closed due to lack of mail delivery as well as because Robertson had died two years earlier without leaving any children behind to take over the business. In 1807, General Andrew Johnson ordered all Cherokee Indians living within five miles of Fort Sumter removed pursuant to the Treaty of New Echota which ended the American Civil War. This resulted in many people moving westward into what is now North Carolina hoping they would find new homes rather than face slavery or possible removal back east if they did not agree to sign treaties giving up their land and resources including their children accompanying them during their journey westward such as John C wheeler who settled near Elizabeth City prior to Indian Removal Act of 1830). As a result of this relocation many families decided to move into what is now Boone which began happening around 1800 with some coming from Augusta and other areas further south including Jackson County (now Alamance) . There are still descendants living here today including those born after 1960s when white flight increased within the city limits

Boone has been home to many notable people throughout its history including James Meredith who became the first African American student ever admitted to Ole Miss University in 1962, former President George W Bush who served two terms as mayor of Boone from 1995-2000 and then again from 2003-2007, businessman Floyd Krieger who founded Krieger Paper Products in 1974 which continues operation today as one of America's leading paper manufacturers - both within the United States market and internationally - Bob Dylan who spent time living in nearby Oxford before moving into Nashville in 1961 where he recorded his hit album "Blonde On Blonde" at Liberty Records subsidiary Acuff-Rose Music Compilation Enterprises Ltd., also headquartered in downtown Boone; current Mayor Todd Rutherford; artist/writer/director Reginald Hudlin; author Jody Webb; educator Dr. Lonnie Hinton among others
