During World War II, much effort went into creating airfields within range of New Bern (then Elizabeth City), NC so that Allied bombers could bomb German targets in eastern North Carolina; these airstrips are now part of downtown Asheville's Many Sights district walking tours are available throughout downtown every day from 9am-4pm during winter months or by appointment only at some locations such as Avery Hall at UNC–Chapel Hill from November 10th -March 3rd open Thursdays 9am-4pm
