Gun sights have been a part of firearms for centuries. There are many different types and designs of gun sights, but the most common type is the dot sight. A dot sight is a sighting device that consists of two parts: a platform that sits on the breech and a lens that projects light onto the platform. The platform can be rotated to adjust the magnification, and when used with an appropriate finder scope, it allows shooters to target their shots accurately. One of the earliestdot sights was developed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. This design consisted of a metal frame with a round, brass objective lens at one end and a circular aperture at the other. The objective was attached to an arm or hand piece which then allowed shooters to aim their guns using natural eye movement rather than turning crankles on an aiming pin. The first true dot sight designed specifically for handguns was patented by George Weiser in 1876. This design consisted of three parts: an objective lens, bell housing, and reticle wheel/iron post/pointer assembly. The objective lens provided magnification while the bellhousing held up to 50 rounds per magazine (admittedly not very impressive). The reticle wheel/iron post/pointer assembly allowed shooters to point their guns at targets with great accuracy regardless of eye movement or grip angle. In 1887, John Brownell submitted his improved version of Weiser's handgun sights patent number 46949A which featured adjustable turrets and corrected elevation adjustments as well as windage adjustments for almost any rifle or shotgun calibers out there at that time!
