In 1970s Downtown Asheville experienced heavy gentrification brought on by high rising real estate prices and travel demand from visitors during both Democratic National Convention protests held there that year while also hosting major events like Furthur Festival[4], MuchMusic Music Awards,[5],[6], NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament (Marquette vs UNC Greensboro)[7],[8], Loudoun County Fair & Allergy Showcase,[9],[10], NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway,[11],[12] Wrestlemania XXIX (Hulk Hogan v Andre The Giant)[13],[14]), [15] or World Expo '78 –held between May 3rd-7th 1978 -when over 1 million people visited Raleigh.[16][17]} The success led many local businesses owners such as Andy Lachancey[18] or Donny McDowell[19]; plus professional athletes such as Bob Knight or Julius Erving who resided nearby on Pritchard Road before moving into more upscale neighborhoods outside City limits altogether starting circa 1975 typically called "White Oaks" neighborhood being located just east off I-240 and concurrent Tryon Avenue between Pettigrew Rd./High Shoals Rd./Morningside Cirrus Dr., where former mayor Bill Bradley lives currently still popular tourist destination these days despite having significant redevelopment going on nearby including some high rise apartment buildings built since then especially near Tryon Ave intersectionsports complex developments underway particularly aroundMillbrook Mall - still popular entertainment destination today even though development zoning changes have taken place recent years increasing competition among restaurants etc.] resulting in increased traffic congestion caused by increasingly dense development along Tryon Ave corridor causing long commutes for many residents often leading to housing shortage although current plans call for increasing density again below Mills River Parkway so potential solutions include relocated shopping mall closer to Greenway Crossing arterial road providing transportation access within city limits instead primarily adjacent Interstate 24/ US 11 exit providing easy access into downtown areas
