Asheville, North Carolina is a city in the state of North Carolina. The population was 841 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Watauga River and is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has been known for its arts and music scenes, as well as its wine country appellations such as Châteauguay and Riesling. The first European to visit what is now Asheville was guide-turned- trader Samuel Davidson in 1760. What would become Asheville was laid out by James Robertson in 1819 on land that he had acquired from Governor Tryon during the Cherokee Removal hearings. At first, townspeople used the name "Henderson" because there were no roads or highways in what is now Asheville yet. Henderson's store became one of the most popular meeting places for local businessmen and political leaders during this time period. In 1828, Henderson donated land to help form what would eventually become downtown Asheville with streets named after him including State Street (later renamed Chapel Hill Avenue), High Street, Elm Street, and Trade Streets. In 1839, a schoolhouse/market/church complex called Christmastime Church was built on Broad Street which later became University Boulevard. Downtown Ashevile experienced rapid growth in popularity due to new streetcar lines being created within it by entrepreneur James Meredith in 1865 and continued development until 1907 when electricity began reaching downtown areas making things possible for businesses to open up today. Downtown Ashevile saw another monumental change when First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt moved into nearby Holly Springs House beginning a decades long relationship between both cities that continues even to this day! Today, much like then back when Downtown Ashevile boasted brick buildings with high ceilings and extensive courtyards complete with marble steps leading down to wide sidewalks lined with fountains alluding towards an elegant lifestyle for those who could afford it; many business owners have retained their downtown presence including restaurants such as Mario’s Pizza & Pasta Warehouse (now known as Pizzeria Bianco), Biltmore Golf Course Lodge Apartments (now known as Historic Biltmore East Hotel), Ashley Furniture & Appliances (now known ASHEVILLE HOMES INC.), Barnes & Noble bookstore chain., Overheadtexas barbershop./ hair salon/, Fitness Zone gymnasium (/30 Minute Workout /25 Minute Workout / adjoining Soho fitness studio/, live music venue called The Gilded Cage (/10 Cent cover charge only/$5 drink minimum per person at night/$10 Patron special nightly), along side retail stores like JCPenney (), Sears (), Kmart (), Dollar General (), automotive dealership () Asheville has always been home to some very talented people! This includes musicians such as Emmylou Harris who lived here from 1976 until her death in 2008 while also musician Donny Hathaway who spent his early years here before moving on to Nashville where he achieved international success playingcountry blues singer Willie Dixon etc.. Many famous athletes have also come through town including basketball players Julius Erving(Raleigh)and Michael Jordan (Chicago). There are also plenty of creative professionals represented like architects Philadephia Partners LLP (). And last but not least; many locals consider themselves “Well-to-Do” simply because they can afford more than average Joe!
