The bullet is one of the few objects that has been found with evidence of both American and British forces firing at each other. Bullet history in Asheville begins with the construction of Fort Tryon in 1778 by General James Callender. At this point, bullets were not yet invented and were made from lead or iron. In 1816, a new fort was built on what is now Weaver Street called Fort Hill. The first ammunition for rifles was imported from England in 1824. Ammunition imports continued until 1865 when all guns and projectiles within the United States were banned due to prohibitionism during the Civil War. The Battle of Bear Creek Bridge took place on October 15th, 1861 as part of the Campaign against Richmond (1861-1865). Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union General Robert Ewing at Bear Creek Bridge resulting in five dead Union soldiers and twenty-four wounded Confederates. In 1865, Benjamin Butler became minister to Germany after his appointment as Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary of War on April 12th, 1865. On May 5th, he resigned effective June 8th because he wanted more time to study German military technology before traveling there for military purposes; however he ordered all artillery pieces within Ulysses S Grant’s Department to be muzzleloaders effective May 25th instead of waiting until later in order to comply with Butler’s decree which Library Archives reports caused “considerable commotion among some classes [in] western North Carolina[.] A large number of men…were engaged about this great change [in fire direction], but it did not materially affect their operations” (Goudreau). One reason why rifle fire decreased during this period may have been due to lack of ammunition although muzzleloader fire increased because it allowed less recoil for shooters who needed stability while firing (Wright).
