This growth spurt followed similar patterns throughout much of America during this time: small towns flourished when commerce boomed while villages went downhill during lean times; however, this pattern did not hold true for Appalachian counties like NC’s Wake County where development continued unabated despite heavy reliance on agriculture for revenue. In 1881, Asheboro became one of thirteen townships within Randolph Countys initial boundaries which were organized into two counties - Ashley County to the west and Carteret County to the east - pursuant to efforts by Representative Thomas Pickens Sr., one of twentieth century Charlotte's most powerful political figures. The growth of industry in Asheboro during subsequent decades led to a decline in population during World War II but has since rebounded with a current population of 1,198 according to 2010 census estimates. Much commercial activity takes place within walking distance or near Interstate 24/85 as well as several shopping malls including JCPenney, Macy's and Sears which have attracted national attention over recent years due both their architecture and their large body count among retail tenants combined with high levels of joblessness statewide since 2007-2008.
