It lies on the Cumberland River, about 20 miles (32 km) west of Raleigh and 10 miles (16 km) east-northeast of Chapel Hill. The settlement that would become Asheboro was founded by Captain John Smith in 1729 as a small station on the lower Yadkin River. He named it for his old home, Ashburn Place in London, England. In 1747-48, Colonel John Byerly established himself at Asheboro with five hundred acres (2 km²). By 1802, when North Carolina became an independent country under President George Washington's administration, Ashley had reached its peak as an agricultural center with sixty slaves working thirteen farmssteads around town; four thousand people lived within one mile (8 km) of downtown Ashley! The first post office called Asheboro was established in 1836; it moved to its current location near downtown in 1852. The growth of industry during World War I led to sheets of aluminum being produced at nearby Triangle Workshops and also spawned new businesses such as Ralston Purina pet food company and American Tobacco Company cigarettes factory. From 1948 until 1967, Asheboro served as the primary training ground for American soldiers during Operation Neptune's Spear which were military operations against North Vietnam
