Asheboro is a small town in the county of North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–High Point micropolitan area. Asheboro is located in Carteret County on the east side of the mountains between Raleigh and Durham. The town was founded in 1835 by General John Cranch as Fort Nashborough on a bluff overlooking Asheboro Bay. The name was changed to Asheboro after Major General James A. Ashe, who had been killed during the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. After campaigns against Native Americans and Tories, General Johnston renamed Fort Nashborough Weldon Headborough in 1865 to honor George Washington's aide-de-camp and friend, Major General David Gadsden Weldon. Asheboro became an important railroad junction in central North Carolina during the early 20th century due to its location near both Durham and Raleigh Railroad tracks and its access to other parts of eastern North Carolina through Hawkes Mill Road (now Interstate 85). After World War II, businesses moved out of town while people returned for new generations; however, development has resumed since 2000 with suburban housing developments around the original downtown core including several shopping malls as well as a professional soccer team named Charlotte Independence SC which played its home games at PNC Park from 2005 until 2018 when it relocated to nearby Goodson Stadium

Asheboro is a town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Asheboro is part of the Charlotte–Fort Mill–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Asheboro were traders and missionaries who came from England in 1765. They named the town for General David Ashe, who fought in the American Revolution. Asheboro was incorporated as a town on December 12, 1892. The name "Asheboro" comes from the Cherokee language meaning "place of three rivers." The three rivers are the Yadkin River, which forms the border of Asheboro; Catawba Creek, which flows through it; and Broad River, which connects it to neighboring Durham. The first post office in Asheboro was established on December 12th, 1892. It operated under the name "Greenville". On January 1st 1903 Post Office #2 opened under the name "Bluffton". In 1907 Post Office #3 opened with a new building that still stands today. In 1912 Post Office #4 opened with a new building that also still stands today. It served as both an courthouse and private residence until it burned down in 1941 while being used as a military airbase during World War II. In 1957-1958 two buildings adjacent to Highway 275 were constructed for use by Appalachian Regional Commission (ARCC) agencies located north of Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area including Asheville and Chapel Hill . These buildings remain extant as State Capitol Building & ARCC Annex currentlyserving as offices for NC Senate District 19 & 20 On October 1st 1968 General Electric Company moved its headquarters from Newark Liberty International Airport NJ to Greensboro following their purchase of Wurtsmith Instrument Corporation Thereafter over 6000 jobs were created at GE's Research Laboratories within 4000 feet of original home site
