Asheboro, North Carolina is a town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 21,872 at the 2010 census. Asheboro is the county seat of Forsyth County. The first white person to come to Asheboro was James Ransom in 1827. Asheboro was founded on May 25, 1829 by Rev. John Hargrave and Dr. George Washington Sharpe as a Presbyterian church settlement in what is now Forsyth County. In 1830, the town had a population of only twenty-one people and it remained small until the late 1800s when growth began to occur due to its strategic location on the frontier between North Carolina and Georgia - also home to many slaveowners - as well as its access to railroads which made it an important center for trade and commerce. When General Michael Johnston's forces were posted at Fort Donelson in 1861 during the American Civil War, Asheboro quickly became one of his most important supply points because it lay just south of Chattanooga and could easily be transported by wagon or horseback across the Chattahoochee River into Tennessee without being subject to Confederate capture or blockadeading. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert Ewell's disastrous attempt tocross the river near Chattanooga with three divisions of his army under Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest (known as "The Old Hickory"), Asheboro again became an important military supply point for Johnston's retreating army; its residents helped provide food for those marching southward through their town on December 12th that year before fleeing into surrounding mountainside towns such as Tellico Plains and Kingston upon Hull when word arrived that Atlanta had been sacked by Union troops two days earlier. Asheboro is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 11,752 at the 2010 census. Asheboro is the principal town of the Alamance–Forsyth Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 27,621. Asheboro is located on the Yadkin River and includes parts of both Alamance and Forsyth Counties. The first permanent settler in Asheboro was John Pickett who arrived in 1792 from Scotland. Pickett built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. He and his family were replaced by several others before 1800 when James McMurtry settled in what is now northeastern part of Asheboro and began to cultivate land around his cabin. In 1812, William Hays established himself as a trader in nearby Carrabelle Township with stores at what are now Main Street and Goodale Avenue. By 1824, over 20 businesses had been founded along Main Street between Loudoun Road andlimits Creek gorge; some still operate today including Girdler's grocery store (now known as J&J Grocery), Weiser's Clothing Store (now known as Weiser Paper Products), Asheboro Baptist Church (now known as First Presbyterian Church), Hardie's Department Store (now known as H&H Foods), Biltmore Hotel (later called The White House Hotel) and First Methodist Church (later called First Presbyterian). In 1827, Samuel Maynard organized an agricultural society in Asheboro to improve farming techniques around this time period through experimentations with new methods such as crop rotation, irrigation systems and field improvements such as ditches and drains Improved roads were also begun then connecting different parts of Alamance County with each other for trade purposes This coincides with the growth of towns like Durham which started out small but soon grew into major cities during this period Many people from Albemarle County followed suit looking for opportunities to better their economic situation within newly formed societies or Cities like Raleigh where jobs were available More than one thousand people moved into Asheboro during its early years according to data collected by historian Tawna Goldenstein following a local historical marker dedication ceremony held on November 6th 2009 Ashley Park Elementary School opened its doors on September 9th 1924
