It has been called "the most powerful Black community in America" due to its contributions to education, business, political power, and social justice. Asheboro is a town in Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,834 at the 2010 census. Asheboro is the county seat of Chatham County and home to East High School and the Asheboro-Chatham Volunteer Fire Department. The community is also home to Asheboro Baptist Church, which has been called "the mother church of small towns".[1] The first Europeans to visit what is now Chatham County were merchants from Spain who explored the area in 1519. Jesús de Nunez traveled through this region in 1585 and named it after his patron saint, Our Lady of Bethlehem.[2] In 1735, surveyors named the area that includes present-day Asheboro after General John Forbes while he was on a military march through this part of North Carolina. Lieutenant Colonel James McMurry commissioned Captain George Washington with the task of exploring this interior country in 1740 while he was stationed at Forks Tavern on Roanoke Island. Forbes located what is now Asheboro on April 26, 1741 during his march westward along I-40 from Charlotte.[3][4] The first settler in what would become Asheboro was John Suggs who arrived around 1802.[5] He set up a millstream near today's intersection of US Highway 301 and Old Weaver Road. Suggs' mill continued operation until 1862 when it burned down due to an overloading accident.[6][7][8][9] Another early settler was Michael Welsh who migrated from Wales about 1807 and built a cabin on current day US Highway 401 just south of Main Street[10]. Welsh remained here until1888 when he sold his land parcel to Askeaton Presbyterian Church trustees for $150 cash plus 6 horses, 3 carts, 4 farm teams (two plows), three spreaders (for planting corn), two buckets for mining coal,[11][12] four cows (to milk) and some other items[13][14]. A store opened by Welsh soon became one of the most popular attractions in town as people could purchase everything from groceries to clothing up until about 1915 when electrification made buying goods such as clothes or tools much more difficult than it still is today. By 1915 there were no stores open except for one operated by Mrs. Ethel Gentry which closed about 1930 because times had changed so much since then! In 1861 Confederate troops burned down Suggs' Mill due to an overloading accident; however they did not damage any other mills within our town limits! Things started changing very soon afterwards when war began! Many farmers volunteered their time and resources towards fighting for their state instead of taking care their businesses! Many black men also enlisted in service during that time including William White who enlisted with Company C Fourth Regiment infantry regiment commanded by Major General Edmund Kirby Smith. After being released from captivity Union forces found him living amonghis white friends enrollment at Weldon College where he eventually graduated Magna Cum Laude but never returned home again!!! When we think back on those days we can only imagine all that went into making sure our own community functioned just fine….. From 1860 thru 1865 almost every housewife farming family here contributed something………. including picking cotton off the ground(!!!)
