Asheboro is a town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 23,827 at the 2010 census. As of 2019, the population is estimated to be 24,903. Asheboro is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now Asheboro were French traders and their Indian guides who built a trading post on an island in the Ashley River in 1792. The post served as a base for fur trade activities between Canada and America until 1824 when it burned down due to bad weather. In 1837, General Edmund Pemberton decided to make Asheboro his permanent military headquarters after victories over Confederate forces at Battle of Stones River and Battle of Bull Run which enlarged Ulysses S. Grant's map of Virginia (see Map of America). A year later, General Pemberton founded the University of North Carolina here with $5,000 from his own pocket; undergraduate instruction began at this institution on October 1, 1840. In 1861 during the American Civil War (see American Civil War), Asheboro was one of five towns surrendered by Confederate troops without battle because they were located near Wilmington – one day's march from Raleigh – instead of fighting against Union troops under Abraham Lincoln. On December 12th 1861 General Pemberton issued a proclamation ordering all residents within ½ mile (800 feet) radius to come into compliance or face martial law; this order resulted in many businesses being closed as people fled to safety. Aftermath included looting and vandalism that destroyed many homes and businesses in town center; however there was also much rejoicing throughout UNC students who had been able to stay safe while their schools were closed! After Reconstruction followed Reconstruction laws designed primarily towards white northerners rather than African Americans which allowed black people voting rights following passage of The 14th Amendment on November 4th 1870 Racial segregation ended with passage Of The Ku Klux Klan Act on April 15th1912
