Asheboro is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 117,545 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in North Carolina after Raleigh and Chapel Hill. Asheboro is home to The University of NC Asheville and thearrondissement of Moorestown. It lies just north of Asheville proper on Buncombe County's eastern edge, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Charlotte and 20 miles (32 km) west of Raleigh. The area that now makes up Asheboro was first settled by Appalachian white settlers in 1795. By 1820, most of what is now Asheboro had been annexed by Durham County, but a small community called Nashvill started to form around mile marker 9 northeast of today's downtown Asheboro in 1824. Nashvill was absorbed into Durham soon after, but some people kept insisting on naming their new town "Asheville." In 1828, when Tryon County was newly formed from parts of Durham and Wake counties, James Caldwell floated a plan for a new town on Salyers Creek adjacent to Burlington (now hiresville). This second attempt at town name selection led to one final vote among residents - Ashtown won over Burlington by two votes. The original settlement near where Nashvill developed included only two houses and consisted mostly of wagon loads or families who gathered year-round for subsistence agriculture; there were no permanent buildings until 1830 when an adobe house was built by Captn John Hawkins along with several barns and other outbuildings on land leased from William Strickland Jr., one half owner/operatorof Chatham Plantation near present day Lawrenceburg Road in northwest Buncombe County. At this time landowning families began gathering regularly for dinner outside their homes during winter months so they could sell produce they raised during the off season inside their homes before markets opened again in early springtime; these gatherings became known as "Festival Days." Some important events which took place during this time include: Raleigh Female Academy being founded as Trinity Female College in 1830; Cherokee Removal – On July 4th 1835 Cherokee Indians burned down four settlements along the Altamaha River System including Butner (later renamed Danville), moving 400 people across Lake Oconee southward towards Wilkes Counties; Cherokee Outbreak – A seriesadic outbreak occurred throughout western North Carolina between December 15th 1840 through January 5th 1841 caused by respiratory problems brought about by contact with rat droppings found throughout easternNorth Carolina following major floods that year… In 1860 Drury Wright purchased 240 acres southeast of Nashvill from Drury McMullen for $2 per acre which he named "Wright's Valley". He intending to develop it into farmland but died five years later without ever having accomplished his goal due to illness contracted while traveling through North Carolina campaigning for Union troops against Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell.. After Wright’s death, his wife Elizabeth continued farming part-time while also raising six children who went onto become farmers too themselves; she sold all her land except 92 acres located southwest cornerof Wrights Valley & US 421 approximately 1930 removed most trees then restored massive amounts using techniques then available

In 1825, John Coker established a landing on the Pamlico River near today's downtown Asheboro to provide transportation for tobacco crop exports from Edgecombe County. By 1827, Ashley had become a thriving commercial center with stores and hotels catering to settlers and travelers from surrounding counties. In 1838, when Alamance Countys boundaries were redefined following the American Civil War, Asheboro became one of four towns within Alamance Parish in order to serve as its civic center and marketing hub. It remained an important community through both World Wars I and II due to its location close to military installations including Raleigh-Durham Air Force Base and Fort Bragg (nowCampbell Army Air Field). During WWII Asheboro served as a prisoner-of-war camp for Confederate troops based at Fort Fisher during their campaign against General Robert E Lee. Today Asheboro remains an anchor point for cultural events throughout Alamance County as well as economic development thanks to its proximity to several Fortune 500 companies including Coca Cola Co., Unilever Plc., IBM Corporation, Foxconn Technology Group LLC and Kaiser Permanente Inc..
Asheboro is located in the eastern part of North Carolina, about 20 miles from Charlotte. It was founded by white settlers in 1752 as a small town on the edge of a natural reserve. The town grew rapidly after it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and by 1810 Asheboro had become one of the most important slave markets in the country. In 1860, when Confederate forces advanced into North Carolina, Asheboro was attacked and burned by Union troops.
