In 1960, after years of efforts by local officials and citizens alike, Asheboro received municipal recognition as an "urban center" through passage of an ordinance creating this designation by then-Mayor Harry Calkins III.. This designation helped spur development within Asheboro into today's vibrant commercial district complete with several large shopping malls as well as medical facilities and other major businesses including IBM World Headquarters which has been headquartered here since 1971).
