Asheboro is a town in Onslow County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,829 at the 2010 census. Asheboro is the county seat of Onslow County and home to the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Asheboro is also the center of the surrounding rural community of Asheboro Village. The area now known as Asheboro was part of Cherokee County until it was split off from Onslow County in 1868. The first person to settle in what is now Asheboro Township was John Smith in 1796. Other early settlers included William Hance and James Dillard who built homes on present-day east Main Street and north Tryon Street respectively. A gristmill on present-day west Main Street began operation around 1800, but it was not completed until about 1830. In 1819, Elijah Wilkinson bought land in what became Asheboro from Richard Henderson for $75 worth of goods and equipment plus four horses. Wilkinson named his new township after his father-in-law Joshua Jordan who had died a few years earlier while serving with distinction as a colonel under General Andrew Jackson during the American Revolution. In 1840, John Suggs purchased land adjacent to what is now east Main Street from Amos Hickman for $150 cash plus eight slaves he acquired through purchase or sale during that year's slave trade across Confederate lines into South Carolina.. Suggs built a cabin near where Tryon Avenue meets US Highway 20 today as his home until his death in 1865.. In 1848, David Forney founded an agricultural store called Forney's Store on present day southbound US Highway 601A just south of intersection with Tryon Avenue.. That store operated until 1951 when it closed due to economic conditions.. Forney also donated land along Tryon Avenue between US Highway 601A and Tryon Drive today for use as apartment complexes . . . In 1868, following recommendations by Chief Justice Roger Breen for splitting Cherokee County off from Onslow County so that its citizens could better focus their efforts onlocal development rather than national defense issues related to ConfederateBLOODY NATION operations (and resultant high taxes), General Beattie ordered all county offices within CherokeeCounty Closed effective July 1st ..... With only 1/2 million residents still living within CherokeeCounty limits (compared to over two million residents within Onslowcounty), much effort went into developing infrastructure such as roads and schools necessaryto support this small population ..... By 1870 most businesses had relocated out of reachof Cherokees living outside Ofslowcounty limits ..... However some shops and residences remained open insidethe walls ofGovernmental buildings including courthouse uptown on Franklin St., Post Office building(now apartments) at 9th Ave & Westminster Rd., Sheriff's Department office at 12th Ave NW corner des Plaines Rd., Baptist Church at 5th Ave SW corner Pine St......... Many people moved away during this time period such as young Robert Easley who left textile manufacturing cityof Durham NC for rural life near Asheboro .... He would later become one of America’s leading voice advocates for civil rights .... By 1880 there were 2 churches located in Asheboro village - First Presbyterian Church which served plaintiff’s class action suit brought against merchants doing business with Unions; Second Presbyterian Church which served local farmers markets ...... by 1890 there were 11 businesses located in downtown Asheboro ...... One notable feature about this era was that many families started working togetherowned enterprises rather then individual businesses...... Another important factor during this time periodwas how Oak Ridge National Laboratory became situatetoashore southeast OFASHORE entrance....... By 1900 there were 25 businesses employing over 100 workers...... Most important developments duringthis time include establishmentof electric lights throughout town beginning November 1902 ............. In 1910 A&P grocery store opened up next door TO post office......... Many other small businesses dottedthe landscape throughout these years........Many people continue working hereabouts into our current day ...... Today Ashley Parish continues making contributions both economically AND militarily TO THE COUNTRY!
