Asheboro is a city in North Carolina, United States. The population was 30,898 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Ashe County. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg-Wilmington, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Asheboro was founded on December 12, 1819 by General Richard Harnett and his wife Elizabeth Beecham as an agricultural settlement named for Ashley plantation in Virginia. The first post office in Asheboro was established on January 1, 1826. However, it continued to be known as Ashley Plantation until November 15, 1827 when it became known as Asheboro after General Richard Harnett's son-in-law and namesake Ashley plantation owner Thomas Asheboro. A year later, on December 12, 1829, General Harnett erected a small wooden church at what is now downtown Asheboro with services beginning that same day. On May 10 of the following year (1830), he presented this new structure to the townspeople who had helped him erect it. This building served as both the town hall and courthouse until 1861 when Congress passed legislation providing for consolidated government under one roof in North Carolina which caused all three local governments to merge into one entity effective January 1st that year - making Asheboro (and much of eastern North Carolina) part of the newly created Charlotte metropolitan area - although some residents continued to call their old hometown "Ashley". During its early years as a village – before becoming a city – Asheboro struggled economically due to its remote location and lack of roads and other infrastructure necessary for mounting typical American lifestyle demands such as grocery shopping or visiting friends and family outside the city Limits; however during prohibition times these challenges only became more pronounced given that few if any inland cities were left unaffected by America's then state wide ban on alcoholic beverage sales which effectively stopped most rural people from consuming alcohol even though they may have owned land withincity limits.. In recent decades efforts have been made by Mayor John Stroud III & City Council Members Deanna Whitehead & Crispin Glover Jr., spearheaded by Mayor Stroud III's predecessor Rocky Hardwick to revive downtown business areas including Reconnecting Streetscape project which has seen nearly $2 million dollars invested over 4 years with hopes of revitalizing storefronts along seemingly abandoned One Hundred Street corridor between Catawba Avenue/Old Hickory Road intersection and Pinto Drive/US Highway 401 interchange.. Downtown Business Areas redevelopment effort continues today with plans released in fall 2016 for demolition & reconstruction + largest ever publicprivate partnership funded project in UCC history

However, tension between African Americans and white citizens began to increase during this time period; this led to violence which often left innocent bystanders dead or injured. Despite these challenges, Asheboro continuedto grow until it reached 2,500 residents by 1860 thanks in part to cheap labor from surrounding counties brought about by American slavery! During Reconstruction (1865-1868), aspects of society which were harmful towards black people were eliminated or changed at various levels throughout North Carolina including Asheboro! This helped improve conditions for African Americans living within thestate while allowing whites who had lost their jobs or homes some degree of hope for future stability.. In 1870, following Reconstruction’s end, operations at local mills ended as orders dried up due to increased competition from neighboring states caused by technological advances!. This sent shockwaves through Asheboroughia as many saw their local economy collapsing – something that hasn’t happened since! One major reason why Asheville continues to thrive today despite these challenges may be due partially to entrepreneurship among locals who are passionate about their community!
