The town was founded as a small farming community in 1792 by Welsh settlers. The milling industry became dominant in Asheboro after 1830, when navigation improved and clothiers could ship more goods long distances. By 1900, Asheboro had 2,500 residents and 100 businesses. Agregated until 1948, African Americans made up about 30% of Asheboro's population by 1960. Since then, they've increasingly come into contact with white society but have seen few opportunities to achieve parity or advancement within the town's institutions or economy. Today, there are over 50% black residents in Asheboro while only 10% of all town officials are black. There are also several black-owned businesses that have thrived in this racially diverse environment.

It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Asheboro was John Wesley Powell in 1838. He and his party travelled through the area and discovered coal mines near Cherokee Bluff on their return trip from a survey of the Appalachian Mountains. In 1839, Reverend Jno.[?] Banks opened a Baptist church in Asheboro which later became known as First Baptist Church of Asheboro (FBC). On February 25, 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to attack Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant at Second Battle of Bull Run while they were marching north from Chattanooga to Knoxville; this event marked the beginning of military occupation by Confederate forces in southern Tennessee during the American Civil War. In 1865, following the surrender of General Lee and his army at Appomattox Court HouseClearwater Chapel Cemetery organized an interment for Confederate soldiers who had died during battle or captivity since April 9th 1865 with Captain Jno[?] Henson officiating On December 17th 1870 Isaac Newton Hardee built “Aiken” house #10 on present day Main Street just east of Meetinghouse Road it became known as Mrs Hardee’s home until her death in 1907 timber from new plantations being cleared on both sides of Catawba River made way for homes early 1800s along river banks
