Apex is a city in central North Carolina, United States. The population was 43,859 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Apex County and it is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Hillsborough was annexed by Apex in 1997 while Apex annexation process continued; however, when Hillsborough incorporation happened, it included all of what is now Cary County within its boundaries. The name change occurred because of an agreement between then-Mayor Harold Knowles and then-Apex Township Manager Gregg Quiggi that "Apt." would become more visible to drivers and be less likely to be confused with another town in the county called "Apt." during summer months when both were located near Raleigh's airport). In 2001, Chapel Hill incorporated as a separate city from Durham; this made Grimesville an unincorporated township again. In 2008, there were plans for development along I-40 east of downtown which would have resulted in the displacement of about 350 homes from their current locations and create over 100 jobs across four phases starting in late 2009 or early 2010 - until those plans came to an end after protests from local residents who felt they had been taken advantage of by developers looking for land adjacent to Interstate 40 without first consulting with locals about their impact on traffic flow and housing values.
