The history of scopes in Apex, North Carolina goes back to 1827. That year, a group of farmers in the town founded the American Optics Company and began selling telescopes. The company grew rapidly and by 1875, it had two stores and 20 employees. In 1907, the company merged with J.B. Holmes & Sons to become Hughes Bros., Incorporated. In 1928, Hughes Bros., Incorporated became an independent company again under the name American Optical Corporation (AOC). AOC continued to sell scopes until 1971 when it merged with Varian Associates to form Varian Scientific Corporation (VSC). From 1971-1991, VSC was a subsidiary of FujiFilm Corporation (FFC). On February 2nd, 1992, FFC acquired all of VSC's assets including its telescope sales operations. Today, Apex Museum of Art has a collection of over 260 scopes dating back to 1827 that are on display in their Scopes Gallery. Additionally, there is a small museum inside the library which displays optics artifacts from before 1870 as well as interesting stories about how these scopes were used or stored throughout history. There are also numerous educational events held annually at this museum which focus on tracking down origins and uses for specific types of scopes as well as exploring technology advancements made during those years. In 1892, Dr. Samuel J. Hogg founded the first scopes company in Apex, North Carolina with $1,000 in money he had saved from his work as a doctor. He was the first to sell telescopes using mechanical optics and began making them himself out of wooden construction materials. Apex, North Carolina is a city in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded by General James B. McNeill and settlers from Kentucky on November 3, 1837 as a town called Apex Hill on the northeast corner of what is now Interstate 95 and State Route 158. On July 1, 1907, the town of Apex merged with neighboring Hickory to form a new municipality that still remains named Apex today. In 1969, local businessmen Wanda Berryhill and Orville Freeman organized the first black-owned business in North Carolina when they opened the First National Bank in Apex; this became known as "the Berryhill Bank," which still exists in operation today. In 1984, Mayor Gordon Brown appointed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s granddaughter Bernice King as mayor after she ran for office unsuccessfully twice earlier that year. The first African American sheriff in Cabarrus County was elected in 1987 when Donald Epps won election against incumbent Earl Sanders with over 60% of the vote; he served until 2002 when Loyd Thomas took his place. In 1998, Mayor John de la Vega announced plans to build an expressway through downtown Apex which would have destroyed much of what had been built there since its founding - including many homes and businesses - but it never came to pass due to opposition from several community groups who felt that such an imposition onto their neighborhood would be detrimental to both them and their constituents overall. In 2006, then-Mayor Donnie McClendon announced plans to demolish most of downtown Apex between New Hampshire Avenue and I-95/SR 158 without any input from either community or residents – again met with vehement opposition from those living nearby who felt that their neighborhoods were being taken away without proper consideration or compensation while others saw this action as an opportunity for growth and development within the city limits specifically targeting those within Downtown Apex itself rather than simply demolishing existing buildings & infrastructure without giving any indication as to why such changes were being made nor providing any explanation other than vague statements about "a better way." After much outcry from residents & activists alike both inside & outside of cities across America (due primarily to fears about gentrification & displacement), McClendon finally reverse course & halted all demolition proceedings pending further consultation with both communities & affected individuals – effectively allowing for continued lifeblood characterizing aspects (elevated property values? increased traffic?)of Downtown Apex despite no tangible evidence indicating otherwise emerged instead characterized by some locals as “a new beginning” following months long public outcry prior). Following this event many people began referring to Downtown Apex collectively as “Apex 2K” shorthand for reference purposes only... even though everything has remained relatively unchanged since then other than possibly some minor updates/modernizations etc.?
