Apex, North Carolina is a town in Lincoln County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The name "Apex" comes from the Cherokee word meaning "place of abundance." Its history dates back to 1824 when a group of farmers named Apex Settlement bought land east of the Catawba River from the Cherokees and began to build a community. They called their new village Apex because it had such high abundance of game that it seemed like an apex or topmost pinnacle. In 1828, Vanguard Plantation was founded by Captain John C. Vance and his family on what is now the north side of downtown Apex. By 1830, Apex had become an important stop on the path between Hendersonville and Raleigh for goods coming down the Catawba River. When Raleigh became an city in 1849, many people moved to Raleigh to escape Confederate wartime gambling restrictions. Many of these settlers also came to Apex and began developing its business district which remains today one of its most vibrant areas. In 1861, during Reconstruction after the Civil War ended, local white men formed a vigilante group called The White League to protect black men who were being arrested or threatened by Ku Klux Klan members. Apex is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 20,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham/Chapel Hill Micropolitan Statistical Area. Apex has been called "the Athens of the Southeast" for its cultural and educational opportunities. The area now known as Apex was first settled by Scots-Irish colonists in 1736 when they moved from what is now eastern Scotland to northeastern North Carolina. They named their new land Apex because it was located on an overlook near the present day intersection of Ulysses Road and Chapel Hill Pike. In 1760, Scottish settlers built Fort Raleigh on a bluff overlooking the town and began trading with local Native Americans. When American Revolutionary War forces invaded North Carolina in 1781, some Scots-Irish defenders surrendered at Fort Raleigh while others fought back against British troops under Lt.-Governor Robert Ellington. Some local Tories also sided with the revolutionaries, leading to confrontations between Loyalists and Patriot forces that continues until this day. By 1800, some 8,000 people lived in Apex including 300 slaves who were used to cultivate tobacco fields along with other agricultural products grown nearby by indentured servants brought over from England during the 1700s. Apex's importance diminished during the early 19th century as transportation became more available and railroad tracks were laid through much of what is now Durham County instead of traveling via road or river route like it had been done before. However, smallpox epidemics struck many farms northeast of Apex in 1819-20 and 1828-29 which left many residents dead or sickened for weeks or even months after exposure to infected animals or people living close by on farms where horses became infected with measles (a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by a member of Mycoplasma pneumoniae). In 1831 Reverend John Broughton established a school in downtown Apex which he taught from until his death in 1865; later renamed "Broughton College". A post office operated within Apex from 1830 until 1862; later renamed "Apex Post Office". In 1861 Governor Ziegler created New Hanover County east of Raleigh based on recommendations made by NC General Assembly's Committee on Districts bill number 434; this area included most of what is now Durham County as well as portions of western Wake County and eastern Johnston County today’s Yadkin & Johnston counties." larger towns such as Cary (to the south) sprung up around rural villages throughout southeastern North Carolina due largely to soil exhaustion following decadeslong drought conditions that followed heavy timber planting campaigns conducted by southern white farmers during Reconstruction era
