Apex is a town in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded by Scotsmen in 1838 as a frontier outpost on the Yadkin River. The name Apex comes from an Indian word meaning "headquarters." In 1865, Apex became the county seat of Johnston County when it was created from parts of Henderson and Wake counties. In 1898, Apex became a city after it adopted a new form of government based on municipal incorporation laws passed in that year by the state legislature. Apex is located at (35.866667, -85.026667). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,853 people residing in the town limits who were not included in any other municipality within those borders: 548 residents living inside Redstone Creek Township and 654 residents living inside Fayetteville Township outside Town limits; these are considered part of Apex proper but are not counted towards its population because their residences fall within one or more other municipalities boundary lines; this would give its total population 2,047 for 2000 if all residents within Town limits were counted as part of City Limits which they are not because some live inside both Towns boundaries while others only reside within one or another Municipality boundary line
