Apex is a city in Orange County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. Apex is the ninth-largest city in Orange County and it is part of the Charlotte–Fort Mill–Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. It is also one of two cities in the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The first settlement at Apex was by white settlers from South Carolina who had come to trade with the Cherokee nation during the American Revolution. By 1820, there were about 30 people living here. In 1824, a group of Englishmen led by Colleton Cushing settled here and named it after General James Knyphausen's column that had fought against British forces at Cowpens in 1775. They built a log courthouse and store on Botetourt Street which served as their center of town until 1827 when they moved to what is now First Street. The original name for Apex may have been derived from nearby Indian trails called Akeem's Trail or Upper Spanish Trail because these routes crossed through rapids near where today's uptown shopping district would be located if not for construction projects that moved traffic away from downtown in the early 21st century. Apex was chartered on May 3, 1828 as a county seat for Orange County under act of legislature No. 1 (1829). On December 12, 1830, a new courthouse was erected on First Street between Queen and King Streets following an Act of Congress approved December 5th (1830) providing for such designations "for convenience." On July 4th (1832), an ordinance setting out regulations governing elections took effect; voting booths were established within 2 miles (3 km) of all polling places and no person could vote more than once per day except those owning property worth $50 or more within that radius without giving prior notice to those residing within said limits who were then allowed to cast ballots only by way of lotteries carried out pursuant thereto; $1 per vote resulted in election being declared null and void...In November 1840 John Aiken became Mayor/Clerk-Elect after winning office via special election against incumbent Edward Atwater…In January 1863 Wilmington suffered its worst fire resulting in over 100 deaths – though this did little damage to business sentiment among residents as most goods brought into town got offloaded quickly onto other surrounding towns' stocks…On September 8th 1865 Union troops stormed and sacked Fort Donelson outside Raleigh – opening up one yearlong siege that ended with Confederate surrender on April 9th 1865 Apex experiences significant economic growth due primarily to its location close to major highways I-95 & I-85 as well as job opportunities available nearby including manufacturing jobs at JBL Rubber Company & Samsung Electronics As recently as 2000 some 60% or so of Apex's workforce locales included manufacturing while 10% or less involved service businesses such as personal care or retail services

The area now known as Apex was first settled by the Cherokee in the early 18th century. The region came under English control in 1585 when North Carolina became a part of England. The area remained under English control until 1634, when it was conquered by the Dutch. In 1655, English forces invaded and captured Dutch Fort Orange, which led to the Treaty of Nonsuch, which ended the Dutch-British war.
