Apex is a small town in the county of Heard County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg-Fayetteville metropolitan area. The first knives were made by Native Americans in Apex. There are references to "knives" from as early as 1792 when one of Britain's most eminent surgeons, Dr. James Lindley, noted that aboriginal peoples had sharpened stones to make spears and arrows. In 1810, John Fenton opened his Fenton Knife Works in Apex and continued making knives until 1887. He was also responsible for developing what became known as the American knife industry standard - a VG-10 blade with an edge length of 2 1/2 inches (6 cm). As knife production increased throughout North America, so too did demand for quality knives from those who wanted to protect themselves both professionally and privately. By 1800, many European immigrants had arrived in the United States and started buying land near Asheville where they founded towns such as Greensboro and Hendersonville. They began producing their own knives to meet this new market demand and soonaleigh Steel Company was established with successful operations until 1955 when it merged with two other companies to form DeWitt Knives Incorporated (DKI). In 1957 DKI changed its name to ApexKnives Corporation (AKC) before merging again with DeWittKnives Incorporated on October 10th 1998 into one company - Jickie Industries Ltd., which still operates today!
