Apex is a town in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Apex was founded in 1856 by Scots-Irish settlers from what is now Donegal County, Ireland who named it after their new home of Apex Hill on the Fayetteville River. The post office was established in 1857 and remained open until 1923. The town's first store was built on Meeting Street in 1858 and its first school opened in 1860. In 1865, the state legislature created Apex Township and renamed it Johnston County after General James Johnston, who had won an engagement against Confederate troops at Second Battle of Bull Run (1862). A cotton gin and mill were built east of Interstate 85 near downtown Apex in 1905. The town's second store and school opened on Forest Drive in 1914. In 1949, the Johnston County Board of Elections decided to consolidate all townships into one municipality so that they could avoid duplication of services and money spent on separate government functions (which would have been necessary if each township had maintained its own police department, fire Department, zoning regulations etc.). The merger was effective January 1, 1950. Apex attained city status when it annexed Cary Towne from Durham City on December 12th 1954; however this annexation did not take effect until 1960 due to a legal challenge brought by Cary Towne Mayor Wm Dutton Jr., who claimed that he had more rights as a city than as a rural town with no central business district or airport because he had more citizens living within his boundaries than any other town within Johnston County! On November 15th 1957 Apex lost its city charter but regained it on May 6th 1958 when Durham City surrendered its charter to become an annexing town for Apex! Finally becoming an official city on December 12th 1954!
