Apex, North Carolina is a small town in the state of North Carolina. The population was 9,901 at the 2010 census. It is located in Chatham County. The town of Apex was founded by pioneers in 1814 and named for General Edmunds Apex, who fought against the British during the Revolutionary War. The first store was built in 1815 and it became a post office in 1824. In 1830, the government of Chatham County was organized and Apex became its seat. In 1865, a fire destroyed most of downtown Apex but not before it had many businesses open including a grocery store, lumberyard, cotton gin and sawmill. In 1887, a new railroad line arrived through Apex and made it an important center for trade with surrounding counties. By 1912 there were six stores and fourteen business buildings in downtown Apex- more than any other community within Chatham County. Apex experienced rapid growth after World War II when manufacturing resumed along with increased demand for workers on farms and throughout the industry overall. However: -In 1970s local leaders voiced concerns about potential pollution from production facilities close to town; this led to an effort to ban such operations -In 2000s several initiatives were put into place intended to increase access to education opportunities within town limits while also preserving unique aspects of its history
Apex was founded in 1795 by Colonel James Robertson and his team of soldiers, who were looking for a new home for their troops. The town was named after Alexander Pope's estate in Rome, Italy. The first store opened in 1802 and the first post office opened in 1810. In 1830, the town had a population of over 200 people and it grew to over 1,000 by 1840. By 1851, Apex had a school and 5 churches. In 1865, the state legislature passed a bill that changed the name of the town to Raleigh from Apex because Raleigh already had a similar name (Hillsborough). In 1870, Raleigh annexed Apex and its population went up to 1,500 people. The city hall was built in 1903 and was replaced by the current building in 2006.
