Apex is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. The population was 9,554 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1857 by Scotsman Alexander Henderson and his wife Catharine Caldwell Henderson after they bought land from Governor Tryon for $10 per acre. Henderson renamed it Apex because he thought it would be more successful than other towns near the Yadkin River that had been named Irvin or Belknap. The first store in Apex opened in 1858, and by 1865 there were five stores and a post office in town. That year, Apex also became known as the "Birthplace of Tobacco". In 1868, a cotton gin was built in downtown Apex toprocess cotton imported from Africa. By 1880, there were 30 stores and 20 businesses in town with a population of 1,500 people; tobacco accounted for 60% of all economic activity statewide then. In 1902, when Raleigh County was formed, Apex became its county seat; but by 1906 it had lost its importance as an agricultural center due to advances elsewhere in the county so much so that only one store remained open there until 1971 when it closed down due to lack of customers and competition from larger malls across Durham County which began opening up shortly thereafter). However, during this time period some prominent citizens such as Drayton Walls (founder of Carrboro Medical Center) made their home hereabouts including serving as mayor pro tem from 1951-1957 while also running for governor on three occasions (1948-1951; 1957-1959). Apex, North Carolina is a small town located in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The population was 5,868 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Buncombe County. Apex is part of the Asheville metropolitan area and is home to many institutional and commercial buildings, including the Brenham-based Hickory Grove Plantation National Park and Riverwalk Parkway shopping mall. The first human settlement in what is now Apex was organized as a town on July 1, 1831 by commissioners from Johnston County. The name for the new town was changed to Apex on February 9, 1832 because of objections from Johnston County settlers who wanted to keep their original name. The first post office in Apex was established on May 2, 1832. By 1840, there were 15 residents living in Apex. In 1861, two courthouse blocks were built at the intersection of Highway 25 and Indian Road for $2,500 each and named "Hickory Grove." On November 10th 1865 an election was held to fill three seats on the Board of Commissioners which resulted in one man being elected as commissioner with no vote cast by any resident of Apex; Daniel Gorman became first Commissioner from that day forward
Apex is located in the northwestern corner of North Carolina, bordered by Virginia to the east and Kentucky to the west. The town was originally called Wilmington, but it gained its current name after a natural gas discovery in 1859. In 1865, Apex became the capital of North Carolina as part of a move to replace Raleigh as the state's seat of government.
