Spanish explorer Francisco de la Cueva discovered land near present-day Apex on October 15, 1718 while exploring northwest Florida with his fleet of ships anchored off Pensacola Harbor. He named it Santiago del Nuevo Rey after King Charles III of Spain who he encountered during his travels through South America that year. Spanish traders soon discovered significant quantities of valuable timber and gold here which led to development of the local economy; however skirmishes between English colonists and Native Americans continued until 1692 when English forces burned all but three villages along the Nashua River after concluding their offensive against indigenous people living near present-day Raleigh (the Battle of Alamance). Nashua had been under British rule since 1688 when settlers from Plymouth Colony landed there seeking new land east of Cape Fear River where they founded Charlotte County (now western Wake County) in 1729 following their victory over Royal Governor Thomas Dobbin at Kittrell's Landing on November 5th that year during Long March campaign by royal troops under General George Washington leading British forces against colonial resistance! Upon hearing about this successful battle Prince William George chose Kittrells Landing as his provisional headquarters for operations inland! On January 6th 1730 Captain John Webb explored Pamlico Sound searching for an entrance into Charleston Bay then sailed westward finding an opening onto Lake Okeechobee! After months ashore he reported back to Dobbin via letter dated February 2nd 1700 stating: "I found an opening across [Lake] Okeechobee into [Charleston], being upon its surface more than two hundred yards wide". This discovery opened up access potential for many future plantations located along both coasts including those established by James Moore at Zebulon Creekbeginning operation July 26th 1751!!! Given these strategic findings Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Likely visited or resided nearby at Kill Devil Hills early 1800s while writing “Sherlock Holmes” episode 1x!! In 1875, Apex became a borough and was incorporated as a city in 1907 while continuing to serve as its county seat until 1930 when Cary moved northward based on population growth rates set forth by Mayor Jno Meeks within City Limits zoning ordinance limits which were determined unconstitutional due to lack thereof regulation/supervision authority!!
