The history of firearms in Apex, North Carolina dates back to at least 1892. That year, the town of Apex began purchasing handguns from A.H. Weis & Sons gunsmiths in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The pistols were shipped directly to Apex and used by local law enforcement officers and residents until 1934 when the town ordinance prohibited handgun possession by citizens. In that year, a group of Apex homeowners sought to overturn the ordinance and restored gun ownership rights for their citizens through a referendum process. The referendum was successful and handgun possession resumed as allowed by the ordinance. In 1954, the town manager passed an ordinance creating one-time licensing requirements for firearms dealers in order to ensure fairness in the sale of firearms. This ordinance remains in effect today and is used to regulate firearms sales within the city limits of Apex.

Apex, North Carolina is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina. The population was 2,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1881 by white settlers and named for Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan. In 1907, Apex passed through a process called "census-taking," which placed it within what would now be known as Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. The cotton textile industry ended around 1920, but Apex continued to grow as a bedroom community for eastern Durham Counties until the late 1960s when suburbanization began to take hold throughout much of central and eastern NC. By 1990, however, only about 50% of Apex's residents were still living there within commuting distance of their jobs; by 2000 this figure had fallen to 30%. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, many aspects of local culture were shaped by immigrants who arrived from Europe: Italian immigrants formed a large percentage of the town's population in1881; Poles arrived beginning in 1906; Irish Catholics also came during this time period; Germans settled around 1910; Lebanese refugees arrived after World War II as part of Operation Cedar Key. Today some 25% or more of Apex's total population comes from abroad: most notably from Pakistan (30%), India (25%), China (15%), and Mexico (10%). mainline Protestant denominations make up nearly all adult residents practicing any religion other than nominal Catholicism or evangelical Protestants: Baptist/ Methodist/ Lutheran make up 60%, Catholic 27%, Methodist 11%, Pentecostal 5%. The largest single donor group has been Black Americans who have given $27 million over 10 years to various causes in Apex – more than any other ethnic group outside White America!
Apex was founded in 1736 by James Robertson and other Scottish pioneers. The city became a capital of the United States in 1785. In 1864, it was named for General John C. Frémont, who had fought against Mexico in the Mexican-American War.
