The Fort Fisher National Monument can be found near Apex today - it was once part of New Town and features an artillery range used by both Union forces during World War II and later by Marines during Operation Neptune's Spear (1991). In 1920, when Raleigh became a municipality, it annexed much of northeast Durham County which made Apex even more isolated than before. However, within 5 years after incorporation as a municipality, Apex had developed into one of its strongest economic engines – becoming home to industry such as diecasting shops ( Allied Chemical), paper mills ( Wernham Hogg Paper Co.), shoe factories ( Sears Roebuck & Co.) – all while never losing touch with its agricultural roots or sense of community spirit unique to this small town located on 10 miles (16 km) of pristine Lake James soil between two mountain ranges! After the war ended, many factories closed down and the population declined again until 1990 when it reached its current level of around 507 residents
