Apex is a town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to reside in what is now Apex was James Robertson in 1799. McConnell and his father had been living just east of the present day town line when they decided to move westward because of improved land opportunities along the Transylvania River. In 1805, James Robertson's brother Alexander moved from Scotland to live near what is now Apex and began developing land south of the river for cultivation and eventual development into a community known as "Apex Landing". In 1832, Captain John Chatham organized a group of Scotsmen who founded Chathamtown on lands that would later become Apex. In 1834, Captain Chatham donated all or part of his home property on which today's town stand to make it an official town site. On October 12, 1835, Apex officially became a community under the name "Apex". It was incorporated as a village on January 1, 1938. When World War II broke out in 1939, many people in Apex enlisted in military service early due to high unemployment rates within Cabarrus County at that time. Many businesses located within Apex were also forced to close their doors during wartime because there wasn't any war production available locally that could meet customer demand. When hostilities ended two years later following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, much of local manufacturingactivity recommenced although some smaller companies did not survive another two years with no major economic impact until after World War II when technology advanced and new markets became available for products made outside of North Carolina In 1951–1953 additional families moved into the growing areas north and east of Interstate 95 including parts of Catawba County which had been untouched by growth within Raleigh over this same period Most recently since 1955 there has been significant construction activity typical for any new community expanding beyond its original boundaries always resulting in increased traffic congestion around downtown especially during peak hours
Apex was founded in 1792 by General Robert E. Lee and Colonel Christopher Swain as a small town on the Yadkin River. In 1837, Apex became the capital of North Carolina. The city was renamed Raleigh in 1849 after James K. Polk, the 14th president of the United States. Raleigh's population reached 100,000 in 1870 and 300,000 by 1900. The city was hit hard by the Panic of 1907 and World War II, but recovered to its pre-war level of population by 1960. It is now an estimated 200,000 people living in Raleigh and its surrounding areas
