Apex was founded in 1876 and named for General John B. Apex, an officer of guerrilla forces during the American Civil War who served with Confederate forces. The town grew rapidly after it was incorporated in 1902 and by 1940 had a population of 10,000. In 1953, Apex became one of the first towns to be located on Interstate 85 which made it easily accessible from other parts of the country. The economy of Apex is based primarily on agriculture and manufacturing including textiles, plastics and food products. The chief industry has been since 2009 also light industrial with construction services providing jobs for many people throughout the region in both local and national markets. Apex is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,547 at the 2010 census. Apex was founded in 1879 by John and Anna Smith as a small farming community on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The town name comes from the word "ape" which means "to trip or to fall." In 1907, Apex became one of the original cities in Durham County when it was annexed by Durham. In 1916, Apex became an independent city and remains so today. In 1924, Kemp Peebles built the first permanent home in Apex and named it after himself. He also donated land to help build what is now downtown Durham. The Great Depression led to a decline in business around this time but development continued during World War II with the construction of military barracks and other infrastructure projects. After the war ended, businesses revived with new housing being constructed near downtown and Interstate 95 becoming available for development again. Today, Apex is known for its arts scene with several galleries and museums located throughout town as well as its rich cultural heritage that includes traditional African American musicanship (frequentOKC summertime Performances), international cuisine (The Blue Bottle restaurant has been awarded two Michelin stars), golf (The Ritz-Carlton Golf Course lies within walking distance of most of town) and more than 20 annual events including NHRA drag racing night at nearby New Hampshire Motor Speedway
Apex was founded in 1810 by James Smith, a Scotsman who came to North Carolina as a trader. He named the town after his home country, Scotland. The first store in Apex opened in 1812. In 1828, the state of North Carolina granted Apex city status. In 1865, the legislature reincorporated Apex and changed its name to Raleigh. The city's boundaries grew until they included both Wake County and Durham County. Raleigh became the capital of North Carolina in 1879 and soon developed into one of the most lively and important cities on the eastern seaboard.
