These early residents built homes with logs that they gathered from the forests around them. In 1868, Welsh immigrant James Hardie settled at what is now Apex after moving from Wales three years earlier. Hardie became one of the most successful farmers in northeast North Carolina because he increased crop yields using primitive farming techniques dating back to before European settlement occurred hereabouts. His farmsteads still stand today as evidence of his success – Hardie’s apples are some of the earliest examples found inside Raleigh limits today! After hard work and investment over many years, James Hardie left his heirs large tracts of land stretching all directions through which crops could be grown without intervention or loss due to lack of rainfall or other natural disasters…. This landscape remains largely unchanged today as it was when James Hardie adopted it more than 150 years ago!
