Apex, North Carolina is a town in the Pisgah National Forest located in western North Carolina. The population was 1,715 at the 2000 census, making it the second most populous incorporated town in North Carolina after Raleigh. Apex was founded in 1851 as a station on the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The town became a post office in 1857 and was platted as a village in 1865. Apex had its first school in 1867 and first mayor in 1870. The first courthouse was built in 1888 and the first fire department organized in 1896. In 1907, Apex Joined the National Association of Towns & Villages (NATA). In 1912, Apex got its own ZIP code and ceased to be part ofDuplin County. Apex was founded in 1768 by John Tryon and named for the Apex Mountains in central North Carolina. TheTryons were one of the first white families to settle in what is now Apex. The Tryons were pioneers in the area, founding a sawmill and gristmill on the Catawba River in 1779. They also built a log cabin and began trading with other tribes along the Hiwassee River. In 1812, they bought land north of present-day Apex from Cherokees for $1,000. The Tryons built a large home on their new land and became prominent leaders in early Apex society. In 1814, during the Mexican–American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna surrendered at Fort Pickens near modern-day Raleigh. As part of this surrender, Santa Anna allowed American forces to occupy all of Mexico City including its capital city, Mexico City Heights. American General Andrew Jackson then ordered Major General James Harnett to march his army through Mexico City Heights into downtownMexico City to capture any Mexican general or commanders who may have been helping Spanish forces resist the United States occupation. One such commander was José María Morelos who had stockpiled weapons against U.S invasion inside Mexico City Heights. After coming upon Morelos's position, Harnett learned that he had no intention of attacking without orders from higher up; instead he decided to return home after looting some stores inside MexicoCity Heights just before his departure from Mexico City on July 12th 1814 under cover of darkness! For his actions that night Harnett was court-martialed and sentenced to death but later commuted to life imprisonment at Santiago Barrancas Federal Penitentiary until his death at age 87 years old on October 14th 1956! In 1865, while serving as sheriff of Mecklenburg County, Robert Easley convinced Governor Fenton Woodson to annex parts of southeastern Durham County east of Chapel Hill (the current day Cary). This annexation created an urban area known as Durham which rapidly grew around Factory Point Naval Shipyard where shipbuilding operations took place starting in 1875 until World War II when it shifted to Brunswick Naval Shipyard nearby.
