Albemarle is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Albemarle is located on the southern edge of the Piedmont region and lies about 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Charlotte proper. The first settlers in this area were Quakers who arrived from England in 1727. In 1819, General Andrew Johnson set out from Albemarle with 9 hundred men to explore and claim new land for the United States. They first located what is now Gastonia when they discovered a large body of water which they named "Lake Johnston" after General Johnson's aide-de-camp. In 1829, Congress created Alamance County and named it for General Johnston. The town site was chosen because it had an excellent location for trading with other parts of the country and its narrow streets made it easy to defend against Indian attacks. The settlement of Albemarle began in 1833 when Captain John Moultrie founded a small plantation here called White Springs Creek Station on what is now East Stroudsburg Avenue near present day Albemarle High School. Despite being initially successful, Moultrie's business failed within a few years due to lack of available shipping space on Lake Johnston and competition from larger plantations farther upstream in Alamance County. By 1840, only 12 people lived in Albemarle; most were farmers or traders involved in local commerce or animal husbandry activities Although there was some industry early on such as brickmaking, lumbering and tanning operations soon followed while farming became more common until World War II when there was little except agricultural production throughout much of what is now Alamance County . However during World War II many factories were built around town including Alcoa aluminum smelters that produce munitions

Albemarle is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. Albemarle was founded in 1792 by Colonel James Grant and General Nicholas Spyke. It became part of the United States in 1814. The town was originally named "Newbern" after Sir John Newbern, 1st Baronet (died 1672). The grant for Albemarle came from King George II of England on December 12, 1792. In 1814 it became part of the United States as a result of the Mexican-American War. The first settler in Albemarle was Captain James Grant who arrived with his family on July 2, 1792. He built a cabin near present-day Main Street and named it Grantsville after himself and his father Major General James Grant (1723 – 1800). A post office called Grantsville was established at Albemarle on October 10, 1800, and remained in operation until 1830. In 1802 Colonel Nicholas Spyke moved to this area from Winchester and took up land that he had purchased from Lord Fairfax about three miles east of Grantsville on what is now First Avenueirting around present day Carytown Square. He named his new place Spykeshaw Bay which means "spicy bay". In 1812 he donated 8 acresaddons to the town for $100 (). In 1840 Captain John Hargrave located a sawmill on what is now Second Avenue just outside of downtown Albemarrle Township (). This mill produced wood until 1861 when it closed due to competition from larger mills in neighboring townships. By 1850 there were 10 businesses operating within the boundaries of Albemarrle Township including five stores, four blacksmiths, two carpenters/builders/etc., four farmers with six hogsheads corn and eight bushels potatoes per capita; one harness maker; one cooper; two wheelwrights; one plumber; one painter; three dyers; two soapmakers - all small businesses engaged primarily in agriculture or manufacturing products such as textiles or clothing etc.; ten residents out of a total population of 21 hundred people living within its limits when counted according to Federal Census figures for 1870."
