The settlement around Parsons Road began to grow rapidly as people searching for new land found their way here from all over North Carolina looking for property they could purchase or build themselves on top of settlements already present. When the American Revolution started, many poor farmers joined forces with the patriots against British rule because they wanted independence for their states rather than continue under Britian's control with arbitrary taxes and no say in government decisions. Many soldiers who served here during the revolution returned home after successfully fighting for their country but some decided to stay and start families here permanently after escaping British rule. During these early years there were few schools open so children had to learn how to read and write using traditional methods such as drawing pictures on paper or carved symbols onto posts until instruction opened up in 1814 when Drs Benjamin Banneker and Thomas Edison founded Transylvania Female Academy which educated women throughout eastern North Carolina beginning with girls aged five until they reached twenty-one years old while still living with their parents or other relatives--an unheard of event at that time!
