Gun targets have been a part of the history of Albemarle County, North Carolina for many years. The first and most common type of target was a buckshot shot gun target. These targets were made from local pine trees and would be elevated so that anyone shooting at them would have a clear view. There were also paper targets called "Dirty Dozen". These targets were made out of thin sheets of paper and would be filled with lead balls which could be hit by any object or person trying to shoot at it. The second type of target was the rifle range target. This target consisted of a long, straight piece of wood about 12 feet long and 4 feet wide at one end. On one end was a sight line drawn perpendicular to the other, making it easy for shooters to find their spot on the target. At the other end was a heavy metal bracket that had been attached thereto by either screws or nails. When someone pulled the trigger, the ball striking this bracket would cause anbang noise which could be heard up in the range. Riflerange Targets continued to be used until around 1930 when they were replaced by pistol ranges due to changing regulations governing firearms

In 1865, Union general Ulysses S. Grant ordered General William Tecumseh Sherman to deploy his army for a major offensive in the Shenandoah Valley. Sherman's orders were to capture as much of the valley as possible before turning it over to Confederate forces. On July 1, 1865, Sherman's army crossed the Potomac River and began its march through the Valley. On July 3, 1865, they came upon a Union cavalry regiment attempting to flee from battle. Sherman ordered his troops to open fire on the regiment, killing all of its members. This action is often considered one of the most tragic moments in American history.
Albemarle is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. Albemarle was founded by Welsh colonists in 1734 as a small community on the Yadkin River near what is now Chapel Hill. The town quickly grew and by 1871 had a population of 10,000 people. Albemarle became an important center for agriculture and commerce in the area and saw growth in its schools and cultural institutions. In the 1930s, Albemarle underwent rapid development as a result of World War II; it grew rapidly with new housing projects being built along the riverfront and elsewhere in town. During this time, many African Americans moved to Albemarle from other parts of Durham County to work in industry or raise families; some businesses also hired white employees during this period. After World War II ended, Albemarle experienced modest growth until the late 1960s when suburbanization began to take hold and jobs shifted away from downtown areas into surrounding townships and villages. However, recent growth has again been spurred by development within the city limits; such activities as mixed-use redevelopment along Main Street have helped create new business opportunities for Albemarle residents throughout the years
In 1757, the legislature of North Carolina passed an act providing for the organization of a system of education in that state. The first such school was opened in Albemarle County on July 1, 1758. For many years, it was the only educational institution in the county. In 1827, the legislature established two more systems of education – one for whites and one for African Americans – and Albemarle County became one of these counties.
