Albemarle is a town in Gastonia County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Albemarle has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years and was first settled in 1765 by Englishmen under the name of Alamance. In 1851 it became a county seat and remained so until 1901 when its status changed to that of a town. The first permanent settler in Albemarle was John Heard who arrived there on Christmas Day, 1765. He built his cabin on an elevation near what is now Market Street and named it after his home state of Northampton in England where he had come from. Albemarle's earliest businesses were agricultural pursuits such as raising hogs and pigs, manufacturing pottery, distilling whiskey and other liquors, growing corn and potatoes for local consumption, packing goods for shipment to Georgia and South Carolina as well as offering services such as driving stagecoaches across the mountains to Asheville or extricating cattle from confinement at nearby Pisgah National Forest. By 1800 this heyday had ended with many small farms becoming defunct because of lack of market demand or competition from larger outfits marketing their products locally rather than through out the region due to transportation costs or distance to markets large enough to support such enterprises In 1851 Gaston County was created from portions of North Carolina including Alamance County which included Albemarle Township Albemarle became a county courthouse in 1881 but its status changed again two years later when Gaston County annexed Baptist Church (now First Baptist). At that time also several other churches were added including Reformed Presbyterian (1892), Methodist Episcopal (1900), African American Pentecostal Protestant (1901) denominations prior to their respective reestablishment as separate congregations following Reconstruction within the United States At 1st blush Albemarle may seem like another unremarkable farming community situated within easy reach of major cities like Charlotte and Raleigh but beneath surface appearances lies something much more significant – it represented one corner of what would become known during Reconstruction as "the New South" where white Southerners sought opportunity while African Americans fought for justice & equality . After all these years since independence Allemarrles inhabitants continue to experience some degree ol integration into both society outside & inside their own towns & villages Despite recent changes wrought by Hurricane Katrina they cling steadfastly unto traditions & values dear to their hearts
